My Son’s Mysterious Illness

A diagnosis that will rock my world and forever change the way I look at holistic healing.

When Ryan was 5 years old, he starting exhibiting motor tics. They were slight and barely noticeable to most people. But they were there.

He also started displaying obsessive-compulsive symptoms like having to do a “routine” every time he got dressed. At first I thought it was quirky and, to be honest, kinda cute. But I quickly realized this wasn’t normal behavior.
His OCD never really got in the way of his daily life though, so I just let it be hoping he would grow out of it.

It is this time that he started Kindergarten and was notified that Ryan had ADHD symptoms including being fidgety in class and not being able to focus. He’s FIVE I thought to myself. This is normal for a young boy…right?
His pediatrician gives him a diagnosis of ADHD and suggests medicine. I suggest diet change. She scoffs at this. I decide to get a new pediatrician.

I put Ryan on a strict gluten free, dairy free and dye free diet. His behavior dramatically changes and he’s less hyper. I couldn’t be happier. But that happiness is only temporary.

Fast-forward a couple of years. Ryan has had bouts of motor tics that mysteriously come and go. His OCD behavior is so slight, but still there and his academics…well…let’s just say he was not up to par on any level especially when it comes to math. He’s anxious and throws tantrums at the drop of the hat.

Last spring, after almost 6 months with no motor tics, Ryan came home from school with an extreme case of tics. I was beside myself! He was agitated, had dark circles under his eyes and had tics almost every second. His tics were so bad, that he looked like he was having a seizure. He even had them while he slept.
I called every health care practitioner I could. From pediatricians and neurologists to chiropractors and naturopaths. His official diagnosis from the neurologist was TIC DISORDER. When I asked WHY he had this, the neurologist had no answer.

As a mom, I knew I wasn’t going to stop until I FOUND that answer. And I did.

Enter P.A.N.D.A.S. No, not that cute furry animal. P.A.N.D.A.S stands for Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders After Strep. This disorder occurs after strep (or Lymes disease, infections and even seasonal allergies). With P.A.N.D.A.S, your body doesn’t react like every one else’s when it gets strep. In fact, many kids do not even have strep like symptoms. Instead, it’s an autoimmune disorder that affects the child neurologically. Symptoms can be sudden and wane in and out of remission. Symptoms include anxiety, ADD and ADHD symptoms, bedwetting, OCD, tics, mood disorders, poor math skills, poor handwriting and many more.

I heard about P.A.N.D.A.S from a group on Facebook and frankly, I was terrified. The stories from other parents and what they had to go through to even get diagnosed was enough to set off my anxiety. You see, this disorder has only been discovered in the late 1990’s so many doctors are not versed in it. The other issue is that is spans so many disciplines of medicine including pediatrics, rheumatology, psychiatrics, neurology and more.

Luckily, my chiropractor was aware of P.A.N.D.A.S and ordered basic blood work to test Ryan for strep. Sure enough, his levels were off the chart. I showed this to my pediatrician who wasn’t convinced because his throat culture came back negative even though the blood work clearly showed strep in his system. I’d find out later that that is very common in P.A.N.D.A.S patients.

I finally found a neurologist that was a P.A.N.D.A.S specialist and he did an array of tests on Ryan. Once again, it showed an extreme case of P.A.N.D.A.S.

I know this sounds horrible, but this whole time I was secretly wishing Ryan had P.A.N.D.A.S. At least it would give me direction in finding treatment. At least I had the WHY answered.

Now I needed to figure out HOW I would cure him.

Stay tuned to Part 2 of My Son’s Mysterious Illness.
