Just Say Thanks

Give yourself permission to feel proud of your accomplishments.

“Wow Gina. You look amazing!”
“UGH! I feel HUGE today. So bloated and nothing fits me right but thanks.”

I cringe every time I hear an exchange like that. It’s unnerving as it is a reminder of how I used to be and how so many women are today. Whether it’s because we truly don’t feel worthy (um, we should really work on that) or we don’t want to come across as arrogant, one thing is for sure: we can’t take a compliment to save our lives!

But it’s never to late to change old habits. Try this one on for size. The next time someone pays you a compliment, take it like a man! Ask yourself, what would a man say if he was paid a compliment like “Wow. You look amazing!” I bet you his response wouldn’t be “I am such a cow!” He’d say “Thank you. I’ve been hitting the gym extra hard these days.” This is because it’s socially acceptable for men to be assertive and confident. But for women, we have been taught to be humbled and modest.

I don’t know about you, but the whole modest thing is getting real old real quick!  It’s time to reject that mentality and give yourself permission to feel proud of your accomplishments! Your inner body bully might be saying you’re not good enough but you have the power to tell her take a hike and let your fabulous self shine through.

If that hasn’t convinced you, think of the person giving you the compliment. This person is taking time and courage to pay you props. Her intention is to make you feel good about yourself. By rejecting the compliment, you are rejecting this person’s good intentions. And believe me, it’s not a great feeling.

So the next time someone pays you a compliment, look them in the eye, smile and graciously thank them for their kind words. And then go strut your thang!
