Cleanse, Shmeanse, It’s all the same…right?!

Detoxing your body is an arduous process. Your body is releasing toxins at a rate that might not be suitable for your body’s temperament.

When thinking of cleanses, most conjure up images of maple syrup, cayenne pepper and extreme fasting. Sure the master cleanse will no doubt “cleanse” you out. But is it right for you?

Why cleanse?

Your body is self healing and self regulating. But every now and again, it needs a little cleaning to make sure all of its parts are well operated.

We inhale and ingest toxins everyday: The polluted air and chemicals we breathe, the excess caffeine and alcohol, the refined sugars and pesticides we eat. These toxins build up and in time, they can create an environment where your organs don’t work as efficiently as they used to. With the proper cleanse, you will strengthen your body’s defenses.

So how do you know if your body needs a little cleaning? You probably need a cleanse if you are experiencing:

  • Tiredness and lethargy
  • Joint pains
  • Headaches
  • Irritability
  • Depression
  • Moodiness
  • Anxiety
  • Bloating and gas
  • Constipation
  • Skin breakouts such as acne or eczema
  • Sinus congestion or other respiratory issues

Are there side effects?

Detoxing your body is an arduous process. Your body is releasing toxins at a rate that might not be suitable for your body’s temperament. The more toxins you have to release, the more severe your side effects will be. Common side effects from cleansing are:

  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Flu like symptoms
  • Chills
  • Fever
  • Acne
  • Diarrhea

Side effects taper off within 2-4 days but if it’s constant or too severe to handle, you might have picked a cleansing program that is too aggressive for your body.

Which cleanse is right for me?

Not all cleanses are created equal and not all bodies can handle detoxes. This is very important to understand. If you drink 8 cups of coffee a day, going cold turkey with no caffeine can be very taxing on your body. If you can’t tolerate the taste of vegetable juice, well, juicing is not for you. If you have any pre-existing conditions, like diabetes, it’s imperative to get your doctor’s permission to start any cleanse.
